Bahía del Duque, awarded EMAS, the environmental management certification of the European Union

As a certified EMAS company, the member hotel of The Tais Hotels & Villas is progressing in its commitment to sustainability, prevention and ongoing improvement

Bahía del Duque has taken another step forward in its sustainability goals and attained the EMAS certification of the European Union, the Community Regulation for Eco-Management and Auditing. The hotel thus joins 25 tourist establishments in the Canaries, 19 of which are located in Tenerife and have received EMAS certification in accordance with the European Commission up until 3 March.

It is a tool with which the European Union recognises organisations that have implemented an Environmental Management System (EMS) and have made a commitment to ongoing improvement, verified through independent audits.

As a certified EMAS country, Bahía del Duque, in a voluntary and systematic way, plans, manages, and improves its performance, committing to rigorous legal compliance and ongoing improvement. To this end, the member hotel of The Tais Hotels & Villas has a defined environmental policy, it uses a management system to protect the environment, harnessing opportunities to prevent or mitigate environmental impacts, and it regularly reports through an environmental statement verified by independent bodies.

Mónica Rumeu, the Head of Corporate Sustainability of Grupo CIO, to which Bahía del Duque belongs, explained that “At Bahía del Duque we have made improving our environmental performance a priority, implementing our activity in a more environmentally friendly way and minimising our impacts, in line with the shared concern of today’s society. In our desire to improve and very conscious of the pillars of Sustainable Development, we have decided to take a step forward through EMAS certification, the most demanding and renowned within the environmental context”.
